Growing up on the Cape we rarely spoke of the presence of sharks until the summer of the filming of "Jaws" on Martha's Vineyard. My Mom took her friend Carol on a girl's trip to the Island to distract her from her husband leaving her that summer. They returned with stories of Bruce, the mechanical shark and how he didn't behave. I was mesmerized. In Jaws, Chief Brody struggles to keep Amity safe while the locals are concerned about losing revenue from the summer tourists. Ironically today you find the image of Great White sharks a positive association on t-shirts, stickers on cars and local beers.
